　　1，表示過去某段時(shí)間正在進(jìn)行的動(dòng)作。 When he arrived at 9:30 am, two people were waiting outside the office.

　　當(dāng)他早上9:30到辦公室時(shí)，有兩個(gè)人在外面等著他。

　　It was a dark night. The wind was blowing hard and the rain was falling heavily.

　　那是一個(gè)漆黑的夜晚�？耧L(fēng)怒號(hào)，暴雨如注。

　　2，過去一個(gè)動(dòng)作發(fā)生時(shí)，另一個(gè)動(dòng)作正在進(jìn)行中.While we were having maths the head master broke into the classroom.

　　我們?cè)谏蠑?shù)學(xué)課時(shí)，校長闖了進(jìn)來。

　　Mary was making a dress when she cut her finger. 瑪麗割破手指時(shí)正在做衣服。

　　3，過去時(shí)間里兩件事同時(shí)發(fā)生. While Mr. Atkins was reading the newspaper, his wife Mrs. Atkins was preparing the dinner.

　　阿特金斯先生在看報(bào)紙的時(shí)候，他的妻子阿特金斯太太正在準(zhǔn)備晚餐

　　兩件事同時(shí)發(fā)生，一般用while表示“當(dāng)…時(shí)候”（不要用when）
